Carrying Hope in Cristo Rey
Cristo Rey is a small, deeply impoverished community in Nicaragua, located beside a landfill that serves as a primary source of income for many families. Life here is shaped by hardship, but also by resilience - and by a shared belief that education can open doors that poverty tries to close.
Several years ago, Primax began supporting students in Cristo Rey through a local scholarship program. At the heart of this effort was a husband-and-wife team devoted to the education and well-being of children in the community. Their commitment was personal, hands-on, and rooted in deep care for each student’s future.
During the early years of the program, tragedy struck. Shimsangbouk, the husband and namesake of the scholarship, was diagnosed with cancer and traveled to Korea for treatment. Despite his declining health, his wish was clear: he wanted to return home to Nicaragua.
He did.
The night before his passing, Shimsangbouk met with the students whose lives he had helped shape. The following day, he passed away—having fulfilled his final desire to be with his community. In honor of his dedication and sacrifice, the Cristo Rey scholarship was renamed the Shimsangbouk Scholarship, ensuring that his legacy would continue through the lives of the students he loved.
Today, that legacy is visible in powerful ways.
Maryeli Rubi Navarrete Rivera is now entering her fourth year of university, studying Medicine with a focus on Anesthesia and Resuscitation. She maintains a strong academic record and is beginning hospital internships - an essential step toward becoming a healthcare professional who will serve others with skill and compassion.
Students like Bryan speak simply but profoundly about what the scholarship means: support, encouragement, and the knowledge that someone believes in them. His gratitude reflects not only financial help, but a sense of dignity and hope.

Others, like Mayaring Blandon, share how the scholarship allows them to continue their studies with confidence and peace of mind—relieving the constant pressure that often forces students to abandon their education. Abigail, Nahum, and Jenni echo this same truth: the scholarship is more than assistance; it is motivation, stability, and belief.
Jenni, who is studying both at an English academy and at university, beautifully captures the heart of the program. She hopes that one day she will be able to support others, just as she has been supported.
These stories remind us why the Shimsangbouk Scholarship exists. It is not only about education—it is about honoring a life devoted to service, and about investing in young people who will carry that spirit forward.
Through every student supported, Shimsangbouk’s legacy continues- quietly, faithfully, and powerfully.
